Grapefruit

Nutrients: 1/2 a grapefruit has 52 calories, 2 g fiber, 64% DV vitamin C, 28% DV vitamin A

Health benefits: Red and pink grapefruits are rich in the phytonutrient, lycopene, which has been found to act as an antioxidant, fighting cell-damaging free radicals. Studies also show that men who consume the most lycopene-rich foods are less likely to develop prostate cancer, as compared to those who consume the least. Several other studies have found that eating grapefruit daily can also lead to lower total and LDL (bad) cholesterol by up to 15% and 20%, respectively.

Quick-prep ideas: Add diced grapefruit to your favorite salsa. Or cut grapefruit wedges into thirds and place over a bed of lettuce with cooked shrimp, avocado, and a splash of citrus dressing.

What to look for: Heavy fruit for its size, smooth skin, firm feel with slight give when squeezed.

Where primarily grown: Florida, Texas, California, Arizona
