Rebecca Holt
Location: Denver, Colorado area
Children: Celidah, age 10; Jade, age 9; Corbyn, age 7; Jairon, age 6; Zachariah, age 3; and Chantelle, age 2
Get-fit goals: “To move more and to make sure the kids are having fun when they’re moving.”
How she plans to do it: “I find things to do in the house that would work just as well as walking or going to the gym. I run up and down the stairs when I’m doing housework, and when folding and starting laundry, I do calf stretches by lifting my heels off the floor.”
Activity she likes: “I’ve been working lately with an exercise ball—I’ll sit on it and do partial sit-ups.”
Obstacles to overcome: “I have mild seizures and vertigo spells. When I’m walking, the vertigo causes dizzy spells that make it hard to keep going. And my muscles tire quickly and easily, and my physicians don’t know why.”
A family affair: “My husband exercises with the kids, taking them out to the field to play soccer, baseball, football, and lacrosse. Plus, he goes running with the older girls once or twice a week, and he gets the kids involved with doing push-ups and sit-ups.” The kids love this, Holt says: “The kids try to beat Daddy with push-ups. And in the summer, the girls say, ‘Daddy, it’s time to put your running shoes on.’” The Holts encourage activity so much that the kids don’t have any motarized toys—everything is pedal powered!
Why she’s excited about the shape-up challenge: “It’ll keep me going, especially when I’m not feeling well,” Holt says. “It might help with some of my medical issues—I don’t want my muscle fatigue to get any worse.”
